“Kabarett Beyond Borders” Concert at Shelter Theater Is Authentic European Cabaret

Frans Bloem

By John Wharton

Frans Bloem, award-winning cabaret artist from Holland and New York, returns to the Shelter Theater this weekend with his sold-out show, “Kabarett Beyond Borders.”

Singing in five languages across 52 countries, Bloem is famed for his unrivaled interpretation of chansonnier Charles Aznavour, who personally authorized him to sing his classics. Cabaret Scene writes of Bloem, “…a riveting show with a passion that binds the audience to him.”

This year’s reboot performance features renowned pianist and musical director Uriel Orozco and some surprising guest performers. Please join us for an unforgettable evening of authentic European kabarett!

A must-see is Sister Ignatius Explains It All for You, starring Phoebe Grayson. The Catholic nun from hell is back in Christopher Durang’s darkly hilarious 1979 theatrical send-up of parochial-school teaching.

This scripted reading stars one of San Miguel de Allende’s favorite actors, Phoebe Grayson, as the good sister who imposes her rigid morality on her impressionable young students until…well, you’ll have to see the rebellion for yourself!

Frank Rich of the New York Times wrote of this play, “Only a writer of real talent can write an angry play that remains funny and controlled, even in its most savage moments. Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All for You confirms that Christopher Durang is just such a writer.” Lynn Trenning of Art Savant wrote, “The script is brilliant in its grasp of the ironic inconsistencies between Catholic doctrine and practical reality.”

If you’re a recovering Catholic, you definitely won’t want to miss Sister Ignatius’s comeuppance! Tickets for all these shows are available at the Biblioteca gift shop, Tesoros, and online at
