Rotary to Honor Its Citizen of the Year, Doctor Grace Lim

By Skip Essick

Every year, the Midday Rotary Club of San Miguel de Allende honors an outstanding local resident as our Citizen of the Year. The criterion for this award mirrors the fundamental tenet of Rotary clubs around the world, which is service above self.

On February 26, we are very excited to recognize Dra. Grace Lim, whose service to the elderly through the NGO So Others May Eat (SOME), is exemplary of service above self.

Grace Joanne Lim Baga was born in Toronto, Canada, but grew up in San Miguel de Allende, where at five years old she worked side-by-side with her mother Antonette, who founded SOME in 1989. Grace recollects that as a kid, she would always go to SOME and serve.

At the age of 18, she embarked on a medical career that over 17 years took her from medical school to a very successful medical practice in México City. Shortly before her beloved mother died in 2016, Lim asked if there was anything she needed. Antonette told her to keep the SOME program going. It was a mother’s dying wish and a promise that Lim intends to keep. She and her father continued the feeding program, but on September 24, 2018, her father, Joe Lim, unexpectedly died. Now, with both parents gone, the responsibility of keeping SOME rests squarely on Grace’s shoulders.

A thirty-something human dynamo, Lim has a lot to juggle. Not only does she continue to practice medicine in San Miguel with her husband, but she now runs the Spa and Hotel, is a recent mom, and the CEO of SOME. When asked what she could really use, she told us, “a 48-hour day.”

Our community is truly blessed to have Grace Lim, a most deserving Citizen of the Year. Join us in honoring this remarkable woman on Tuesday, February 26. We’re located at Cafeteria San Miguelessen, next to the yellow caboose on Sterling Dickinson. Doors open at 9am with an optional breakfast for 100 pesos per person. The free presentation will begin at 9:30am.
