Local High School Math Teacher’s Art on Exhibit at Café Santa Ana

By Karla Ortiz

As part of its ongoing mission to use its space to promote San Miguel de Allende’s artists, the Biblioteca is showing the work of local mathematics teacher and artist José Felix Alvarado in the Café Santa Ana all this month.

Alvarado has taught in the community high school in Pantoja for 18 years, but his passion for art has lasted all his life.

Since he was a child, Alvarez has been interested in creating things out of paper and cardboard. He taught himself techniques, but also grew up around Ebodio Garcia, one of the first makers of mojigangas in San Miguel.

In 1989, Alvarado suffered an injury that made it impossible for him to conduct his normal activities, so he took refuge in painting. He began studying at the Bellas Artes cultural center, where he met master artist Jorge Vázquez. He took classes with Vázquez from 1989 to 1993, attending drawing classes in the mornings and painting classes in the afternoons. He created a collection of paintings exhibited with his class. After his recovery, Alvarado went back to work, but now as an art appreciation teacher (and later a mathematics teacher at a different school).

Alvarado has painted large murals on commission in private homes and schools, including the Las Casas Institute and the Juan José de los Reyes Martínez “El Pípila” school.

Despite all this experience, the Café Santa Ana exhibit is Alvarado’s first solo exhibit, the result of someone telling him about the library’s mission. Alvarez sent in his application and was accepted.

The café is showing 16 of his works. Alvarado calls the exhibit The Pleasure of Painting.

“They are works that I have painted all my life. Some are recent, others are from years ago. There is even one from 1990. All are for sale, and anyone who wants to see my work on a large mural, sign, or border can contact me at my email,,” he said.
