Two Hearts Mended, One Befriended: New Casa Hogar Program Teaches Residents to Train San Miguel’s Street Dogs

By Marie Abercrombie

Hi everyone, my name is Jake! A kind man named Paul found me curled up in a ball, trying to keep warm! You know how cold nights get here in San Miguel de Allende. Paul took me into his warm home. He couldn’t keep me for long, but he was lucky enough to discover a new project—pairing us with high school residents of Casa Hogar to learn how to train homeless dogs. Boy, did I need a lot of help in that area! Well, the issue of being warm was also important!

It’s a great program for us dogs, but it also exposes our young adults to future career possibilities and educates our community on how to care for their canine family.

Anyway, a wonderful woman and her friend founded this program, called Heart 2 Heart. I am its first graduate! I get to live at Casa Hogar, a home for boys, specifically with a young man named Leonal. He will be taught by the best dog trainers in San Miguel how to train me. Wow, I am one lucky dog! Sit, stay, heel, down, come, and more. All this will make me one of the most well-mannered, best-behaved pets in the world.

When Leonal has me doing all those things perfectly—by the way, I am a very smart dog—I will be adopted by a family! Whoopee! He and any of his other classmates who would like to participate will get other homeless brothers/sisters to train. All of us dogs will be vetted, spayed/neutered, and vaccinated before being allowed to participate in the program.

Please, I would love to meet you, or you might like to follow my adventure with Leonal! You might also like to volunteer. Whatever happens, life is looking good for me. I am excited that my new friends are bringing this program to Casa Hogar and the San Miguel community.

If you think you might be interested in finding out more, feel free to call either Marie at 152 3383, or Patti at 152 1702. They would love to introduce us.
