Jóvenes Adelante’s Annual Fundraiser Sold Out Six Weeks Ahead

Casa Riad Salons Event 2019

By Kate Greenaway

By New Year’s Day 2019, Jóvenes Adelante’s (JA) event-of-the-year was sold out. The invitation-only gala will be held at a private home, Casa Riad Salons in Atotonilco. The program, God Bless the Child—a concert of jazz, spirituals, and standards—will feature countertenor Don Krim, pianist Alexander Pashkov, and scheduled special guest performers Lady Zen and Paul Voudouris.

“It is a testament to the breadth of our support that this concert and feast, priced at US$100 per ticket, could sell out six weeks ahead of the event, bringing over 150 people to an out-of-town venue,” says Krim, JA’s vice president of development and president-elect, as well as the event’s host and performer. “We didn’t have to post a single flier or advertisement. Our internal mailings and our table patrons filled the house. That’s how much this community loves the kids we serve.”

Equally exciting is the spectacular array of items already donated to the event’s silent auction. Initially envisioned as a modest auctioning off of Deborah Whitehouse photographs, donated by the estate of JA’s beloved Jock Whitehouse, the auction table has swiftly swelled to feature over 25 individual items from internationally recognized contributors—the Skot Foreman Gallery, Ana Thiel, Galeria Atotonilco, Don Day, and John Scherber, just to name a few. Several local restaurants and businesses also have leaped in to contribute.

The event, carefully timed to appeal to JA’s large Canadian base of support via Amistad Canada, will honor the six Amistad founders who were instrumental in selecting Jóvenes Adelante as its first major established project. “JA already had an impressive track record of fundraising and service delivery, and since 2013, when we joined forces, we have been proud to participate in its steady, careful growth trajectory,” said Amistad project coordinator Donna Rubenstein.

Several JA graduates will be in attendance at the gala event, as will some current students, although most will be hard at work in school. They plan to contribute by bringing their favorite family dishes, which they will make with the help of their mothers and grandmothers. Saray Martínez Tellez, JA’s Student Relations Coordinator, said, “At our Christmas Posada, we had a huge response from students wanting to contribute in this way—it was amazing!”

“This will be a great way to bring our students and their families into the event, rather than having them come to simply make speeches,” added Krim.

This year’s fundraiser is a great kickoff to what is shaping up to be a breakthrough year for Jóvenes Adelante. “As of this writing, we have 15 sponsorships for our incoming 2019 class, more than half our goal of 25,” Krim said. “Of course, the real goal is 28!”

Every JA sponsor makes a five-year commitment to a carefully selected student. This year, the JA program will be serving over 100 students concurrently.

Jóvenes Adelante unlocks a radically more expansive future for San Miguel de Allende youth by easing financial barriers to higher education and by developing life and leadership skills.
