First Friday…Live! Offers a Lively, Musical Kabbalat Shabbat Service Open to All

By Mark Johaningsmeir

FIRST FRIDAY

We invite you to join us for our once-a-month First Friday…Live Kabbalat Shabbat Service, this month held on the second Friday of February, Feb 8.

Our FFL Shabbat celebrations are now in their third year. We welcome all to this lively, brief musical Shabbat service.

We honor the traditions of Judaism by using familiar prayers and contemporary poetry, songs—old and new—as well as stories and other readings. We use a Reconstructionist prayer book. You are invited to join in the singing and share in the readings.

We begin our Shabbat gathering at 5:45pm.The service itself begins at 6pm and concludes by 7pm. Afterward, there is a kiddush and then a vegetarian potluck dinner.

The musical part of the service is led by Jordan Saturen. He plays several instruments and leads the singing of prayers and familiar songs with an open heart and a strong voice. He always invites everyone to join in.

Saturen is from Ashland, Oregon, where he is an active member of a congregation that enjoys singing. He is a part of their chorus and several choruses in San Miguel de Allende. He is bilingual and is married to a native Sanmiguelense with two sons and a large extended Mexican family.

The spoken part of the service is led by Judith Jenya, a lifelong explorer of Jewish paths and former director of a large synagogue. Jenya writes and gives a short, thoughtful talk that is a commentary on the week’s Torah portion. She is also a poet, painter, and motivational speaker. She has been acknowledged for her social justice work around the world.

Jenya was honored as the International Humanist of the Year in Europe in 2002. She incorporates the principle of Tikkun Olam into her life and into the themes of our First Friday…Live services.

We invite your heartfelt participation. We are building a community and a spiritual home for nontraditional Jews and those who may not have participated in other Jewish observances in San Miguel.

First Friday…Live happens usually each first Friday of the month at the JC3 (the Jewish Community and Cultural Center), at Las Moras 47, at the corner of Cinco de Mayo, in colonia Guadiana. All are welcome!
