Fábrica la Aurora Anniversary Party

By Edward Swift

On February 2, the Fábrica la Aurora art space celebrates its fifteenth year as an art and design center with an art walk in which every occupant of the space will participate.

The former textile mill in colonia Guadelupe closed in 1992 and repurposed in 2002 as a central location for art galleries and studios. Since its formal inauguration in 2004, it has gained international recognition for its model—galleries, shops, and restaurants all in one space, a major destination for locals and visitors alike.

Since 2004, every passing year has been celebrated with an anniversary party open to the public, and this year is no exception. On Saturday, February 2, from 5–8pm, all the Fábrica’s galleries, shops, and restaurants will be open for an artwalk. New exhibitions will be unveiled, by familiar artists as well as by newcomers to San Miguel de Allende.

Kelley Vandiver, well known by the art community, will be in his new location, 13A (former location of the Chrysalis Studio). The art walk will feature Kelley´s large-format hummingbirds and his latest oil on canvas, entitled Awaiting the Birth.

Galería San Francisco will show the work of artist Robyn Child Cole. Her work is featured on the February cover of the San Miguel Walking Guide. Meanwhile, Galería Moyshen will open a new exhibition entitled Ciudades Visibles by the artist Karina Puente.

Christopher Fallon Design will show Jon Schooler, a local self-taught artist who invented a unique painting technique with oils. And for the first time in San Miguel, Fallon Design will introduce México City international designer Lizette Garcia´s unique line of linen clothing for men and women, Onbir.

In addition to his paintings, Mario Oliva will present two exhibitions of photographs: Arquitecturas by Oscar Chavez from Guadalajara, and Manos Mexicanos by Jared Ramirez from Dolores Hidalgo. The gallery continues to exhibit sculptures by Nour Kuri.

Edgardo Kerlegand will present his new series of drawings and paintings, Fractales Apostólicas, and a group exhibition—including Magaly Ávila, Miguel Loyola, and Marcela Herber—can be seen in Galería La 303.

To add to the evening, Miguel Loyola will stage a happening, creating art with an unexpected conclusion. Galería Manuk will inaugurate an exhibition of the artists Angelina Pérez and Marc Zimmerman. Visitors to Manuk will experience a printmaking demonstration by Miguel Canseco and be given the opportunity to create their own graphic design. Visitors can even sign up for a printing workshop to be given by Canseco the following week.

Celebrating the first year in her new expanded space in Section C, artist Beatriz Castaneda will present a survey of her recent work. Using transparent washes of color, heightened by contrasting opaque patches, the artist depicts gardens, landscapes, and flowers in a rainbow of colors.

There will be something for everyone at this free art event, not to mention delicious food, cocktails, and more at the restaurants and cafés interspersed throughout the space.
