Brand New Events This Year at San Miguel Writers’ Conference

Committee at Work

By Susan Page

The San Miguel Writers’ Conference and Literary Festival, February 13 to 17, has now become legendary as one of the most highly acclaimed and popular weeks in the San Miguel year. Most of the Festival events are open to the public by individual tickets, and our customized packages are still available. Described below are some of the new and most tantalizing parts of the conference. All events take place at the Real de Minas hotel.

Corazon de México Fiesta

The annual Writers’ Conference Fiesta offers newcomers an immersion into México’s most colorful and distinctively Mexican celebrations. If you attend nothing else, treat yourself to this unforgettable party. It’s totally new this year, including the location, in the small bullring at the Real de Minas hotel. Friday, February 15, at 8 pm.

Literary Death Match

We are excited about introducing an all-new event to this year’s conference, The Literary Death Match. It is part comedy roast and part game show. Four writers will compete in a “read-off,” critiqued by three celebrity judges. Only one writer will reign supreme. The three celebrity judges will be keynote speaker Susan Orlean, seasoned improv actor Joseph Bennett, and champion storyteller Diana Spechler. Don’t miss the fun. Friday, February 15, at 2pm.

Writers and Freedom of Expression

Journalists, poets, novelists, and essayists the world over are being imprisoned and murdered for telling stories that those in power do not want seen. Even where writers do not fear for their lives, subtle but equally insidious pressures are brought to bear, muzzling writers. This panel discusses the state of freedom of expression in the world today; the physical threats against writing truth; and the social, cultural, and economic barriers that continue to stifle free expression among writers at the margins. This event takes place Sunday, February 17, at 11am.

Reading and Writing across Borders

Hal Wake, Canada’s leading literary talk show host, will moderate a panel of keynote speakers on the complex topic of reading and writing in and about places far beyond home. The panel members, who are uniquely qualified to shed light on this topic, are keynote speakers Paul Theroux, Sandra Gulland, and Cristina Rivera Garza. This panel is planned for Saturday, February 16, at 2pm.

Women’s Voices

We encourage everyone to attend the pre-conference special event called “Women’s Voices.” A panel of women will read short passages from their own works that are especially revealing, poignant, or emotional. Discussion will follow, with the audience very much involved, about the value of communicating vulnerable and self-revealing stories. This event is not part of any of our conference packages except the Whole Enchilada and will take place Wednesday, February 13, at 2pm.
