Shelter Theater’s Upcoming Schedule Features Play Readings, Storytelling and Anam Cara

Anam Cara

By John Wharton

Anam Cara, (whose name in Celtic means “soul friends”) is San Miguel’s refreshing, new musical venture interpreting songs from the ’60s and ’70s as well as traditional folk tunes in deliciously updated arrangements with an Irish lilt. Members Catherine Bryne, Marc Taylor, Jordan Beslow, and Larry Dworksy draw from such unlikely sources as Crosby, Stills & Nash, John Prine, Woody Guthrie, Cat Stevens, Gillian Welsh, Peggy Lee, Bob Dylan, and many others to form their unique sound.

Aside from such classics, though, they also toss into the evening’s fun an Irish tune or two from America and the Shamrock Isle. You won’t want to miss this special show full of good music and new friends, Saturday at 7pm. Tickets for all events are available at the Biblioteca gift shop, Tesoros, and online at www.sheltervg4.com.

Wednesday, January 30, at 7pm and Saturday, February 2, at 3pm, we present Enemies! This new play is a thought-provoking satire that considers the role of violence in society. It’s a witty, fast-paced, life-affirming ensemble piece that questions why violence is committed and if it is ever justifiable. Join us for a play reading with some of your favorite San Miguel actors!

Friday, February 1, at 6pm, come for the ever-popular Shelter Skelter Storytelling Extravaganza. Experience the magical monthly storytelling series with an evening of personal tales that changed the tellers’ lives. Who needs stories? We all do.

Open Mic is your chance for ten minutes of fame on our warm and welcoming stage! Regulars call it the “Cheers Bar of San Miguel.” So get up and go nuts: music, dance, acting, comedy— you can do (almost!) anything you like—or just sit back and enjoy the fun. This week will be hosted by Shane Gibson, AKA “El Juan.” This season, some of your favorite performers will be hosting Open Mic!

Shelter Theater is an easy 10-minute walk down from the Jardín! See our calendar at www.sheltervg4.com for dates and online tickets. Find our logo on the Que Pasa map in the northwest corner. Write sheltervg4@gmail.com for details. Please respect our artists: no-show tickets may be released at showtime without refund.
