Hey Gringo! A Chile Christmas Comes to San Miguel Playhous
By Phoebe Greyson
Described as “part actor, part clown, part raconteur” (Bruce Dessau, The Evening Standard), Pete Searles—who last year performed his hit shows, Hey Gringo! Through Peru, and Sex with Pete Searles in San Miguel—returns January 31 with Hey Gringo! A Chile Christmas, the third show in his internationally acclaimed Hey Gringo! Trilogy.
Prepare to be transported in this often humorous, at times chilling, yet always highly entertaining roller-coaster ride of close scrapes and surprise encounters during one of the darkest periods in Chile’s history.
From the scorching wastes of the Atacama Desert, we travel south through shantytowns and smog-laden cities to a world of forests, lakes, and volcanoes. Accompanied by oversexed train drivers, a beautiful young revolutionary, lots of out-of-work actors, Marxist priests, fascist police, Chilean ecowarriors, and Pinochet’s neighbors—this is a journey that turns into a quest for truth and meaning in a land torn apart by thirteen years of military dictatorship.
Searles’ extensive performance credits include a variety of major contemporary and classical roles in theatre, television, and radio. When asked about his upcoming show and how exactly he found himself in what most of us would consider to be nearly unimaginable circumstances, he replied, “Whenever I traveled, I would have this philosophy—I would travel alone, have no set itinerary, and just say yes to everything. What I discovered, particularly on my Latin America trip, is that when you do that—that’s when the magic doors open. That’s when you get invited into worlds you would never otherwise experience—magical, scary, crazy, wonderful worlds. The show is not so much about me but the places and people I meet along the way. I am merely a witness who allows oneself to be drawn into situations that go, I guess, way beyond the natural confines of the ordinary traveler. This, in essence, is what my shows are about.”
Searles premiered his Hey Gringo! Trilogy at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. He has since toured it all over the world (USA, Bermuda, The Middle East, Far East, South Africa, Europe, and numerous prestigious literary, arts, comedy, and drama festivals.) His adaptation of A Chile Christmas was broadcast to rave reviews as the Afternoon Play on BBC Radio 4.
