Pro Musica presents Verdi’s Grand Opera Rigoletto at Teatro Angela Peralta

By Michael Pearl

For its ninth successive year of opera, Pro Musica again turns to the genius of Verdi for this year’s production: it will stage his masterpiece Rigoletto, a favorite of audiences worldwide since its premiere in 1851.

There will be two performances at the Teatro Ángela Peralta, on Friday and Sunday, February 8 and 10.

Based closely on Victor Hugo’s 1832 play Le Roi s’amuse (The King Amuses Himself), Verdi’s composing reached a new level of sophistication in this groundbreaking work.

We have lined up an all-star cast sure to bring drama, fireworks, and pathos to the production. Rodrigo Garciarroyo stars as the womanizing Duke of Mantua and will sing the opera’s best-known aria “La donna è mobile,” in which he muses on the fickleness of women. Carla López-Speziale returns to sing the mezzo role of Maddalena, Gilda’s maid, flying in for this event from New York. She triumphed as Ulrica in our Ballo in Maschera in 2016.

Enrique Angeles, who wowed us last season with the evil cunning of his Don Giovanni, will also sing the title role in Rigoletto. Rodrigo Urrutia will play the assassin who kills Gilda, Sparafucile. He previously delighted us with his comic performance as Don Giovanni’s sidekick, Leporello.

The action of the opera proceeds almost continuously, with only rare breaks for conventional arias, and even minor characters are delineated musically by distinctive rhythmic, melodic, or harmonic patterns. Verdi was completely overcome by Victor Hugo’s play, which he declared “the greatest subject and perhaps the greatest drama of modern times.”
As well as attending the opera, also consider spoiling yourself with our VIP Opera package, which includes a ticket to the opera with a reserved seat, champagne during the interval, a ticket to our gala fundraiser, and an invitation to the last-night party on Sunday, including food and wine.

The gala fundraiser, which aids our education outreach programs, is on Tuesday, February 5, at 5pm, in a fabulous hacienda in Los Frailes. It starts with champagne and canapes in the gardens and a short concert by the Pro Musica Youth Orchestra. After a candlelit dinner with wine, the stars of the opera sing. These packages sold out quickly last season, so buy now online through the Pro Musica website.

Tickets for the opera are 250, 350, 750, and 800 pesos each and are on sale through the Pro Musica website, at the theater box office, at the Tesoros shop in the Biblioteca Pública, and at Solutions, Recreo 11.
