Patronato Pro Niños Volunteer Tour Guides Give a Personal Touch to San Miguel

image1

By Cheryl Young

Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning, crowds of eager travelers queue up in front of the Parroquia, getting ready to start their journey through San Miguel de Allende’s past.

And who is leading that journey? It might be a retired educator, artist, librarian, geologist, engineer, bank executive, educator, or lawyer. These volunteers are the tour guides of Patronato Pro Niños (PPN).

Most are retired Americans, with also some Canadian “snowbirds” who are in San Miguel for the winter. And we have one lovely Irishman!

All of them have gone through extensive training, an “internship,” and have practiced their 2.5-hour presentation live. And all of them (greeters and support people) happily donate their time to Patronato Pro Niños because they love the history and culture of San Miguel and love introducing new people to this charmed place.

In the TripAdvisor reviews (which the guides read closely so they can find ways to improve), the guides are always praised for their depth of knowledge, warmth, and friendliness. Personal stories about their own journey to San Miguel (why they came, why they stayed) make the tour even more interesting and relevant to those who might also be thinking about making the move.

This recent TripAdvisor review summarizes well why these tours are so popular with visitors and residents: “The tour guides are fantastic and very knowledgeable. The tour with each one is slightly different, so it’s easy to keep coming back. And the money goes to a great cause. We will definitely do the tour again and again in the future.” And another: “We loved this walking tour! The guide was very informative and provided the historical perspective we needed in order to fully appreciate San Miguel. He talked about the architecture, reasons for the city to be a place of artists, explained religious traditions, and even shared a little about his own personal story.” And importantly: “… we went into buildings that I wouldn’t have thought to go into myself without the tour.”

In 2019, the guides invite you to share their passion for the city by taking the Historical Tour, offered since 1992, now every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

One hundred percent of the tour payments and tips go to support the important work of PPN. For 48 years, this nonprofit organization has been providing necessary medical and dental services to children in San Miguel whose families cannot afford to provide it for them. In 2017, there were almost 7,000 children served and over 15,000 consultations—that is more than 1,000 per month!

All tours are given in English. No reservations needed, but if you are bringing a group of five or more, we would appreciate prior notice. Contact Christina 415 152 7796. historicalwt@patronatoproninos.com. Private tours can be arranged.
