One can find an abundance of history in the barrios bordering San Miguel’s downtown. Yet these neighborhoods are rarely explored.

The Biblioteca is offering unique guided walks—“Beyond San Miguel’s Centro.” After a walk of 45 minutes to one hour, each tour concludes with a program at a historic venue serving drinks and tapas.

History Guide Kathleen Bennett will lead the walks, which are limited to 25 persons.

Each walking tour starts at 3pm, and the departure location will be printed on your ticket. Tickets must be purchased in advance at the Library’s east entrance desk.

Individual walking tours are 400 pesos per person, and a Super Supporter Pass is available for 1000 pesos including all three “Beyond San Miguel’s Centro” walking tours. Important to note is that 100 percent of all proceeds are donated to San Miguel’s Biblioteca. Your purchase helps to support the library’s many events, including free classes for children.

The second walking tour, January 31, explores the San Juan de Dios barrio and concludes with an extensive tour of Casa de la Noche, San Miguel’s former home for “ladies of the night,” an institution from a time when prostitution was legal here. Owner Barbara Poole will reveal the history and her recent encounters with ladies who worked in Casa de la Noche long ago. Drinks and tapas will be served during this unforgettable tour.

The third and final tour, “Beyond San Miguel’s Centro,” visits Valle de Maiz, once an important stop along the Royal Road that passed through San Miguel el Grande (San Miguel’s former name). With luck, we’ll get to visit a creator of San Miguel’s famous “mojigangas,” the larger-than-life papier mâché figures one often sees in the Centro or during processions. Near the chapel in Valle de Maiz, we will conclude our walking tour in a beautiful private home, where more history, drinks, and tapas will be provided.

The meeting point for each walking tour is printed on your ticket. Please remember that tickets must be purchased in advance at the Library as all hosts have been promised that there will be no more than 25 attendees. Your support of San Miguel de Allende’s library is greatly appreciated
