The Mysterious Mr Love Is as Charming as the Swindler It Portrays

By Lois Read

On January 8, 9, and 10, San Miguel Play Readers introduces the work of British playwright Karoline Leach. The Mysterious Mr Love is a multilayered play set in 1910 England about a charming swindler who preys on lonely, vulnerable women.

When Mr Love meets his latest victim, Adelaide, a spinster consigned to the back room of the hat shop where she works, things take a dramatic and unexpected turn. Will his talents as a grifter prevail, or will Adelaide test his mettle in ways that surprise even the most seasoned patron of the theatrical arts? This play is chock full of twists and turns.

The Mysterious Mr Love—part romance, part psychological thriller—was first seen at London’s Comedy Theater in 1997. The period piece is as timely as ever.

The Sunday Telegraph calls it “sturdily constructed, strong on Edwardian atmosphere, and full of suspense.” “A disconcerting spell of charm and menace,” wrote the Daily Telegraph, that “keeps you hooked throughout!”

The audience is invited to imagine a hat shop, a promenade along the sea, and a room overlooking an alley in a slightly seedy oceanfront hotel. Anne Campbell and Mick Diener, a charming duo, team up again, this time in the roles of Adelaide and George. Patrick Green handles lights and sound, and the venerable Lois Reed directs. The venue is the St Paul’s Church Parish Hall, Calle Cardo 6. Doors open at 7, and the play begins at 7:30pm or when the house is full. Donation is an astonishingly affordable 30 pesos. Come and enjoy!
