Make Your New Year’s Resolution Kindness

By Jayn Corral

The holiday season is behind us, and it is now “Resolution Season.” To make 2019 your best year ever, you probably have resolved to quit smoking, eat better, lose weight, exercise more, or make plans for that vacation you have been putting off.

Personally, I don’t do resolutions anymore. Every day I try to be true to myself, be kind, and spend some of my time helping the community by helping others. I believe what Secret Santa says: “If you are down and want to bring yourself up, go out and do something kind for someone.”

In San Miguel de Allende, there are tons of ways to do that. I would like to invite you to do acts of kindness for the cats and dogs of the SPA like Nuni and Serinidad.

The SPA houses, feeds, and cares for nearly 100 homeless animals, all without help from the government. All expenses are paid through donations. Care is provided by a small staff and volunteers. Volunteers walk dogs, play with puppies, socialize kittens, and foster young or ill animals. Volunteers also donate money and items that the shelter needs in order to operate. They promote the SPA to residents and visitors through fundraisers or public events.

We invite you to visit our animals at the SPA at Los Pinos 7, 152 6124, Monday through Saturday, 11–2. Our website ( has “Adopt Me!” pages devoted to the cats and dogs available for adoption. There is also a page with volunteer information (under the “How to Help” tab). You can come any day and time and stay as long as you like within that time frame. Time spent with the volunteers is the highlight of the day for our cats and dogs. You, too, will be richly rewarded for spending time showing love and kindness to these helpless animals.
