Sandra Cisneros Reads from Her New Book at Camino Silvestre

SANDRA

By Jim McKeever

On Saturday, December 22, San Miguel resident and internationally celebrated author Sandra Cisneros will read from her new bilingual book, Puro Amor, at Camino Silvestre. Cisneros’s new book explores the love of animals through the eyes of “Missus Rivera” in the Casa Azul. “Puro amor y amor puro. That’s what each pet gave her—pure and clean, pure love and only love. Who wouldn’t want that?”

The book is filled with wonderful illustrations by Cisneros and is a lovely reflection on life, love, and the devotion of pets in our lives. She weaves the story of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera’s often difficult lives together with their undying love for their animals and, indeed, for each other.

Anyone who has met Cisneros in her lectures, book signings, or on the streets of San Miguel will tell you how passionately she takes on life. A “Tejana mestiza” dog named La Cacahuata and a Xolo-Chihuahua named Nahui are her two current companions in San Miguel, the most recent in a long line of pets that have nurtured her soul and writings.

Cisneros has fostered the careers of many aspiring and emerging writers through two nonprofits she founded: the Macondo Foundation and the Alfredo Cisneros del Moral Foundation, named after her father.

During Saturday’s event, Cisneros’s friend Astrid Hadad, a México City performance artist and actress, will perform after Cisneros’s reading. All of Cisneros’s books, in English and Spanish, will be available for purchase, as will Hadad’s CDs.

Cisneros is a poet, short story writer, novelist, and essayist whose work explores the lives of the working-class. Her numerous awards include NEA fellowships in both poetry and fiction, the Texas Medal of the Arts, a MacArthur Fellowship, several honorary doctorates, book awards both nationally and internationally, and most recently, Chicago’s Fifth Star Award, the PEN Center USA Literary Award, and the National Medal of the Arts, awarded to her by President Obama in 2016. Her world-famous novel, The House on Mango Street, has sold over five million copies and has been translated into more than twenty languages.
