Writer’s Conference Panels and Workshops Will Be Open to the Public

By Susan Page

The San Miguel Writers’ Conference opens on February 13. Of special interest to those not attending the entire conference are the panel discussions, all open to the public by individual ticketing.

Panel Discussions for the General Public

Writing and Reading Across Borders

As both writers and readers, we often delve deeply into cultures other than our own. Also, with so much global migration going on all over the planet, people bring their stories with them. This panel is moderated by Canada’s favorite literary talk show host, Hal Wake, and includes four of our distinguished keynote speakers: Adam Gopnik, Paul Theroux, Sandra Gulland, and Cristina Rivera Garza. It is another opportunity to hear them all on this timely topic.

Writers and Freedom of Expression

It’s no secret that we live in dangerous times. Journalists, poets, novelists, and essayists the world over are being imprisoned and murdered for telling stories that those in power do not want readers to see. Five distinguished writers, including the president of International PEN, shed light on this dire situation.

Panel Discussions for Writers

Assembling Your Publishing Dream Team

For writers interested in publishing, this panel is a must. It includes an ensemble of publishing experts and is full of detailed information about how to succeed, whether your goal is to publish traditionally or nontraditionally.

The Wisdom of the Agents

The variety of options for getting your book published these days can be dizzying. This panel of seasoned literary agents will answer many of your questions and give you the latest information about how to proceed.

Memoir and Personal Essay: How Much Dare I Reveal?

Whether you’re writing a personal essay or your memoir, there is one burning question that cannot be ignored: How much dare I reveal? In this panel, you’ll hear from authors who faced this dilemma and figured out how to manage it.

Making a Living as a Writer: Is It Possible?

If you want your passion for writing to be more than a hobby—to actually make a living at it—what are your options? Four successful authors will discuss their experiences as working writers in a wide variety of professional writing positions.

New conference packages

We have made attending the conference easier by introducing several new packages that we hope will fit everyone’s needs. In addition to our usual Full Conference and Whole Enchilada packages, we are introducing a Writers’ Package that includes all Concurrent Workshops for only US$345. Our all-new Pleasures of Reading Package includes all the keynote speeches plus “The Interviews” and the “Literary Death Match” and is perfect for you if you are not a writer, but still want full immersion in the experience of our rich literary festival. That package is only US$295. We have also created a Parties Package for spouses and friends who want to get in on the fun around the edges, for only US$105.
