Two YAM Gallery Favorites Open New Exhibits

oleo sobre tela

By Marie Moébius

Two exhibits by Mexican artists dealing with themes of memory and nomadic wandering will open at YAM Gallery on December 21.

Javier Areán and Agustín González, whose works have been exhibited on several occasions at YAM, will present their latest series of paintings.

Areán’s paintings delve into memory and evoke remembrance. Whether personal or historical, memories emerge sometimes with great clarity (e.g., the floral curtain pattern in our childhood home), and sometimes it is more diffuse (was it summer or autumn?). In Areán’s paintings, the different levels of precision in memory appear adjacent to details and stains. The scene can also be clearly depicted but is out of focus; the colors are faded as if in an old family picture. Indeed, Areán borrows from the cinema a certain treatment of image, resulting in a latent melancholy. His series, Crónicas del Desorden (Chronicles of Disarray), is very narrative. With him, the viewer goes back and forth from memory to reality, and despite that, the focus between past and present in Areán’s paintings seems more real.

González’s new series of paintings is titled Nómada. Since the México City earthquake on December 19, 2017, Agustín has become a “nómada.” His downtown studio became a home to some friends and their families who lost theirs. Thus pushed out of his studio, Areán took advantage of the situation and decided to travel. He has been painting on the go since then: Japan, Germany, Chile, and back to México. His series of small transportable formats of acrylic on canvas are a travelogue.

This exhibition will also inaugurate a new section in the gallery. The window on the Ancha de San Antonio will be used regularly to present the work of an artist who was asked to produce a “site-specific” piece. Danilo Filtrof, artist, curator, and director of the cutting-edge contemporary art projects Museo Insular and Proyecto Showroom will be first to show with Escaparate.
