Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada is among the most luxurious hotels in the city. At this resort spot, whose clients are the world’s most privileged, the employees take time off annually to help the neediest.

Every year, all Belmond properties around the world allocate a percentage of their profits to a charitable cause, an event they call Community Day. Employees also do good works to help a charity. This year, the Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada’s employees’ efforts went to Casa Hogar Mexiquito, a local boys’ orphanage.

Usually, the employees help a different charity each year, but this year they wanted to continue work they had done last year.

“This is the second time that we visited the Casa Hogar Mexiquito. We could just make a donation, but the idea is that we create synergy among all the employees and spend a day with the children,” said the hotel’s Director of Sales and Marketing Ulises Reyes. Doing this fills their hearts with pride, as does seeing how the children’s faces light up when they see that someone visits and cares for them, he added.

Early in the morning, employees prepared shirts with Community Day written on them, gathered cans of paint, brushes, plumbing and gardening tools, and food to bring to Casa Hogar. They quickly set to work painting, mowing soccer and basketball courts and play areas, servicing the restrooms, and preparing food for when the children arrived from their school day.

All the hotel’s employees—from waitstaff and maintenance crews to administrative staff and the hotel director—worked to brighten this day for the 45 boys who live at the home. When they finished their work, the hotel employees served the children food and broke piñatas with them.

Reyes says that employees who do this work return with a total change of attitude toward their work and themselves. “Specifically, we comply with our social responsibility. The employees of Sierra Nevada, as a team, as a single group, decide who carries what, who does what. It represents cooperation among all the employees,” Reyes said.

Although Community Day is held only once a year, the Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada employees also donate school supplies and prescription eyeglasses for community children at other times of the year. In the near future, they plan to organize a charity dinner with guest chefs who will offer a four-course menu. The employees will donate the ticket proceeds to a San Miguel organization yet to be decided.

Check the hotel’s social networks or future issues of Atención for more details about this upcoming event.
