SPA Shelter’s Adoption Fee Goes Up, But So Does What You Get

Dipper

Vanderbilt

By Megan Gabel

This past year, the SPA determined it necessary to change the protocol for our resident animals and expand our already extensive protection even more, far exceeding what others offer here in San Miguel de Allende and even in the United States.

We had a feline leukemia scare that caused us to segregate, test, and vaccinate all our cats for feline leukemia. New kittens are now kept apart from the others until they are at least 12 weeks old, which is the appropriate age to test them. We also decided to increase the protection for our dogs by including a leptospirosis booster.

Our adoption fee has never covered our costs, but to help a little with the increased expense, we raised it from 400 to 500 pesos. Without even considering food and not including standard tests that are done at admission, we lose money on every animal we take in because of how inclusive our adoption fee is. For cats, the fee includes sterilization, all current vaccinations, deworming, the feline leukemia/FIV test, and the feline leukemia vaccine and booster. For dogs, it includes sterilization, all current vaccinations, deworming, the leptospirosis booster, and enrollment in the Green Paw Pet Registration Program. Not only do we want all our animals fully vaccinated and sterilized while they are at the SPA, but we want adopters to benefit by being able to take into their homes a cat or dog for which we have provided the utmost protection.

The SPA is the only no-kill shelter for cats and dogs in San Miguel de Allende. Dipper, Vanderbilt, and our other resident animals (a total of about 50 cats and 50 dogs) count on the SPA to provide food, care, and shelter for them while they are here. Our new protocol to protect them even more and benefit future adopters is expensive but, we believe, necessary and smart for all concerned. We are proud to set an example for all to follow. It’s the responsible path to take.

In that we rely upon donations to exist, we are looking to our supporters, animal lovers with the interests of the cats and dogs paramount, to help us with this endeavor. During this holiday season, please consider making a gift to the SPA as a present to yourself and to others! Who needs another sweater or scarf? It’s easy to donate (via PayPal) online at www.spasanmiguel.org or on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/spasanmiguel. You may also donate by Mexican or US check to “Sociedad Protectora de Animales de San Miguel de Allende, AC” (full name required) or by US check to “San Miguel Community Foundation” (for a US tax receipt) (mark for SPA). Checks may be dropped off at the SPA, Los Pinos 7, 152 6124, or at any La Conexion location (mark envelope “SPA, PMB 18”). Please email info@spasanmiguel.org with questions.
