La Huipilist Artspace Opens “12×12” Exhibit Honoring Virgin of Guadalupe

By Lena Bartula

La Virgen de Guadalupe is the much-beloved patrona of my San Miguel de Allende neighborhood, the arts district of colonia Guadalupe. She’s also known as Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, Empress of the Americas, and Queen of México. In her pre-conquest identity, she’s Tonantzin, Mother of all the Gods, Aztec Mother Earth, or Coatlicue.

Personally, I’ve always thought of her as the spiritual mother of México, in that whether real or imagined, loved or feared, she gave birth to a new land that culminated in what today is a syncretized symbol of unity between the old and the new.

In Santa Fe, New Mexico, in the mid-to-late 1990s, I curated art exhibitions for her every December, featuring every kind of artist, image, and technique imaginable. Now, in the arts district that is our colonia, it’s time to honor her here on this side of the border, her homeland. Of all the history and ideology she represents, she remains a helpful mother figure, a fierce warrior, and the one we call on when we, or our world, is in distress. With all that in mind, I invited several artists to participate in an exhibition in her honor, with 12 by 12 inch works. The numbers signify her feast day of December 12.

This exhibit will feature paintings, photographs, collages, found objects, and sculpture by some of San Miguel’s best-known artists. Ana Thiel, Anado McLauchlin, Gaby Black, Edward Swift, Victoria Pierce, Wilka Roig, and Wendy Moyer are just some of the names you’ll recognize in this collection.

In addition to this multiartist collective, I’ll be showcasing my collection of Guadalupe images from nearly thirty years ago until today, never before viewed all together. It should make for a powerful addition to her feast, which the entire country will celebrate next week.
