Darbukanos Ensemble Takes the Stage at Teatro Ángela Peralta

By Paul Drouin

Belly dance and flamenco performers will be sharing the stage at Teatro Ángela Peralta in a live music and dance show.

Darbukanos is a recently formed San Miguel de Allende ensemble whose members—Federico Azuz (guitar), Israel Chávez (Indian tabla and darbuka), Rúben García (flute), Andrés Suárez (guitar), and Fridha Chacón (dance)—have all pursued independent careers and can be seen performing regularly at various local venues. In recent months, they have been working together as Darbukanos, a new experiment that gives them the freedom to go beyond classic cover songs and commercial music. The brainchild of Fridha Chacón, Darbukanos is devoted to developing a repertoire of Arabic dance and music with a touch of gypsy and Hindu elements.

More than just a musical ensemble, Darbukanos is also very much about dance. Fridha Chacón, who has professional training in classical ballet, has found in belly dance a vehicle for body self-expression, enhancing her performance with such items as swords, zills (finger cymbals), and veils.

Their most recent show, which debuted in October, delighted audiences and received many positive comments. It is with enthusiasm and professionalism that Darbukanos are putting together a new show at Teatro Ángela Peralta. They will be sharing the stage with two special guest artists from México City: Patricia Villalba (flamenco dance) and Darien Muñoz (guitar), who will bring their unique voice, talent, and passion to a production that will transport you into a world of visual and auditory magic.

The performance takes place Thursday, December 13, at 7pm, at the Teatro Ángela Peralta. Tickets are available at the theater box office for 50, 150 and 200 pesos.
