Writers’ Conference Seeks Volunteer Hosts for Ninth Annual Big Read

By Andrew Goodell

The San Miguel Literary Sala will be announcing details at its monthly Literary Sala meeting on December 13 about its 2019 Writers’ Conference Big Read, featuring the historical fiction novel, The Shadow Queen by Sandra Gulland.

This meeting, at 5pm at the Posada de La Aldea will give more details about this year’s book selection and the special events planned in January to offer readers more background on the book and the author. Copies of the book will be available for sale at the December meeting.

For the ninth consecutive year, the San Miguel Writers’ Conference is inviting residents to join in the community-wide annual Big Read, in which participants read the same book selection written by one of the Writers’ Conference keynote speakers and then get involved in a discussion group around town. Discussion questions, a program with background information on the author and the book are provided, and participants in Big Read discussion groups are invited to a meet-the-author event at a private February reception.

The conference is looking for volunteer discussion group hosts. Sign-up sheets for hosting will be available at the Literary Sala’s December 13 meeting. Contact Discussion Group Coordinator Nancy Stich at if you are interested. Discussion groups will gather in the latter half of January.

About the Book and Author

Sandra Gulland’s novel, The Shadow Queen, is inspired by the true story of a young woman who rises from poverty to become confidante to the most powerful, provocative, and dangerous woman in the seventeenth-century French court: the mistress of the charismatic “Sun King,” Louis XIV, who ruled France from 1643 to 1715. The choice spotlights historical fiction, currently one of the most popular genres in literature. Since Gulland is a prolific writer, readers who enjoy the novel will be able to turn to other of her novels.

American-born Canadian novelist Sandra Gulland splits her time between San Miguel de Allende and Ontario, Canada. She has published five books, including two that are set in the court of Louis XIV, and a trilogy based on the life of Josephine Bonaparte. She is currently at work on her sixth novel.
