St Paul’s Anglican Church Installs Its Seventh Rector

By Russ Archibald

On December 9, St Paul’s Anglican Church will install the Rev Canon George F. Woodward III as its

seventh rector since the church’s founding in 1966.

The ceremony, to be led by the Anglican Bishop of México, Right Rev Carlos Touche-Porter, takes place during the Holy Eucharist service at St Paul’s at 10:30 am.

Bishop Touche-Porter will be assisted by the Right Rev John Taylor, Episcopal Bishop of the Diocese of Los Angeles, California, who will offer the sermon. Rev Dr Barbara Stewart, also from the Diocese of Los Angeles, will assist and sponsor festal music for the service by Leonardo Tovar and the Mariachi Comperos.

Canon Woodward began his duties at St Paul’s in June. St Paul’s Church became a parish in 1966 within what is now La Iglesia Anglicana de México here in San Miguel de Allende.

Woodward, now 62, was born in Pennsylvania and grew up in Columbus, Ohio. He received his bachelor’s degree from Ohio University, a Master of Theology from Ashland Theological Seminary, Ashland, Ohio, and a Master of Divinity from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois. He was ordained in 1983 and served for five years as associate to the rector at All Saints-by-the Sea in Santa Barbara. For two years, he was the assistant to the archdeacon of the Aegean, working with Anglican churches and American military chaplaincies in the Republic of Turkey. Following his return to the United States, Canon Woodward was for four years rector of St Timothy’s Apple Valley and dean of the Eastern Deanery of the Diocese of Los Angeles. He became the seventh rector of St Edmund’s Church, a large parish in San Marino, California, in 1995, serving there for 23 years. Over those years, he spent several of his sabbaticals studying Spanish in various Latin American countries. Today he is very fluent in the language.

Woodward served 12 years as vice-president of the international board of directors of the  Cristosal foundation, a human rights organization dedicated to community development within El Salvador that works with the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Church in El Salvador. Together with Frederick Borsch, the retired bishop of Los Angeles, Woodward is the author of Introducing the Lessons of the Church Year. His book, The Prayers of the People, was published by St Mark’s Press in 2013.
