The Academia de Música San Miguel has a mission: that everyone discover they are musical, that they learn how to find the rhythm in everything around them. And to this end, the organizers of this music school urge students to not only learn an instrument but to participate in ensembles.

The school’s founders, Paty, Víctor, Fede, and Remi, live their lives immersed in music. They play a variety of instruments themselves—drums, guitar, piano, and more. They came together due to participating in various musical projects together and stayed together to found their own business—a school where children from nearly infancy can learn to play an instrument.

With more than 30 years of experience, Paty introduces children as young as six months old to music using the Orff method. Once these very young students have foundational concepts of music under their belt and know how to read music, they are ready to perfect their talents with professors.

We all are born with a talent to play a musical instrument, says Fede, but some have had the opportunity to better develop that ability. On the other hand, concedes Paty, the ability to sing is indeed a gift one is born with.

Organizer Víctor Monterrubio told Atención that this school—created and run by musicians—is an asset to San Miguel. Thanks to group’s connections in the music world, they are able to bring professional musicians in to offer workshops. They believe they are also changing lives for the better: it’s better to have a musical instrument in hand than a weapon or even a tablet, they believe.

“Music is the most noble art, and it involves everything from emotion to technical proficiency,” said Monterrubio. “It does not matter what instrument you play, the most important one is the emotion inside you, because we all are born with music in us.
