GravityWorks School of the New Circus Arts, with its group GravityKids, will present for the third time its aerial adaptation of The Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky, with a cast of 20 acrobats aged eight and up.

GravityKids have performed in different events and venues throughout San Miguel de Allende, including for Desarollo Integral de la Familia, or DIF, of San Miguel. They have also appeared at Plaza La Luciérnaga and the Rotary Club at their Pancake Festival.

They have also performed at the Ángela Peralta Theater with their aerial adaptations of Alice in Wonderland, Cats, and previously The Nutcracker with different casts.

The aerial group GravityWorks was formed in 2001 in San Miguel de Allende by Canadian Nisha Ferguson as part of a movement that began in the 1980s with Cirque du Soleil, with circuses using more acrobatic entertainment instead of animals. In 2008, the school was founded under the direction of teacher Ceci Corona, who also designs the performers’ costumes.

Corona, who has a background in classical ballet, works with more than 40 students at GravityWorks studio at Casa Hacienda, El Caracol 135. Among ropes and colored fabrics hanging more than seven meters high, children over six up and adults alike come to aerial classes.

The space is filled with mats, mirrors, and bars. Students learn their routines and form rhythmic and intense movements, which will take our breath away when we see them perform. During rehearsals, more advanced students help the younger ones who have less experience memorizing their routines and becoming fluent in their movements.

The cast has been rehearsing once a week in addition to their classes for the last eight months in order to get ready for the show.

The shows are Friday, December 7 and Saturday December 8 at 6pm at the Ángela Peralta Theater. Enjoy getting involved in the interpretations of these young and not-so-young acrobats who welcome the coming Christmas with their work and enthusiasm in presenting The Nutcracker.
