By Zayra Aguilar

Internationally-acclaimed Peruvian guitarist Alfredo Muro will bring sensuous classical guitar to Casa Europa México on November 29, accompanied by American cellist Michael Severens.

The program features pieces by Celedonio Romero, Pixinguinha, Astor Piazzolla, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Baden Powell, Bach, and more great Latin composers.

Muro is a gifted arranger and composer and has released many CD recordings of his own and other artists’ works. He began teaching himself guitar at the age of nine and won a national prize three years later. His virtuosity spans many eras and musical traditions, but he is especially noted for his sophisticated interpretations of the modern Latin guitar repertoire. Through the years, he has performed throughout the Americas Europe, and Asia. He was the featured artist at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC for the Millennium Center Series in 2007, and he performed at a special audience for the late Pope John Paul II at the Vatican.

His concerts unfold for audiences as a personal experience. While he is undoubtedly a classical guitar virtuoso, he brings more than strong technical talent to the stage. His love for the music he chooses and the sensitivity with which he plays allows his performances to be deeply felt as well as heard. He has the rare ability to become the music, losing himself in it and enabling the audience to rise above their own experience and share in his. While this is evident on his many recordings, it is in live performance where this manifests most strongly.

The musical development of Michael Severens, who studied chamber music at the New England Conservatory in Boston, comes from a diversity of backgrounds. He trained under scholarship with Eugene Lehner of the Kolisch Quartet, then later attended Bennington University in Vermont, where he received a bachelor of fine arts, and obtained his master’s of fine arts degree at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California.

Michael has performed as a soloist at numerous festivals and venues throughout México, the United States, and Cuba. He is currently the main cellist of the Symphony Orchestra of the University of Guanajuato.

General admission tickets are 200 and 250 pesos, available at the Biblioteca box office and at Casa Europa México.
