Classic TWA Plane to Be Transformed into Cocktail Bar

A vintage TWA Lockheed Constellation airplane is en route to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, where it will become a one-of-a-kind cocktail bar at the highly anticipated TWA Hotel. The US$265 million hotel and 1960s-themed airplane cocktail lounge are scheduled to open next year.

Built in 1956, the special Lockheed Constellation, known as the “Connie,” entered service in 1958 and was operated by Trans World Airlines for three years before becoming a bush pilot plane in Alaska, then a drug-running plane in South America in the 1970s. It was eventually abandoned in Honduras, then brought to the United States.

The TWA Hotel promises to restore the magic of Eero Saarinen’s landmark 1962 TWA Flight Center. In addition to rooms boasting views of JFK’s runways and the TWA Flight Center, the hotel will feature meeting and event space, six restaurants, eight bars, a rooftop observation deck with pool, and a fitness facility.

An onsite museum will be devoted to the Jet Age, TWA, and the mid-century modern design movement, among other highlights. No mention is made of the Jetsons as yet.

Travel Trivia

What countries do not have an official language?

There are many reasons a country might not take up an official language. Religious and ethnic differences often play a role. Ethiopia, for example, has 84 languages spoken within its borders. Giving one a privileged status could cause tension and conflict. It could also be a way of protecting minority languages from disappearing. And while 58 countries claim English as their official language, neither the UK, US, or Australia officially recognize it as theirs.
