Dear Editor

Dear Editor:

Caminamos Juntos and allied organizations prepare for Honduran refugee caravan

The estimated 7,000 Honduran refugees walking north through México are expected in early November to reach the city of Celaya, some 49 kilometers south of San Miguel de Allende.

Ignacio Martinez Ramirez, founder of ABBA House, the well-known migrant refuge in Celaya, is directing the extensive preparations for the caravan while Caminamos Juntos of San Miguel, the Refugee Relief Fund under auspices of the Latin American Relief Fund, the Train Tracks Project, the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of San Miguel and other organizations and individuals are funneling resources to ABBA House to build the inventory of needed supplies to provide the caravan with adequate food, shelter, clothing and other assistance.

Preparing to meet the needs of thousands of people who have been trekking for weeks is an enormous task. Celaya will dedicate its city stadium as an encampment area for the caravan. ABBA House and the team of organizations named above are providing the material, human and financial resources to supply the encampment with bedding, food, bottles of water, walking shoes, light-weight blankets, chap-stick, personal hygiene items, medicine, and other necessities.

You too can lend a hand to ease the suffering and hardship among these courageous people fleeing drug-war related violence, chaos and poverty. You can help most of all by providing money to fund the purchasing of supplies. Caminamos Juntos of San Miguel urges your support through the GoFundMe site Help for the Caravan.

Volunteers are also needed and will be trained for the work at the Celaya Stadium, which will include welcoming the caravan and directing people to services and bedding areas, cooking and distributing food, handing out water and other supplies, and providing security. Those wishing to volunteer should send an email with name, availability, and telephone number to cjsma@gmail.com.
