Calendar Girls Now Playing at the San Miguel Playhouse

By Judy Newell

Inspired by the true story of a group of respectable, middle-aged British women who for their local Women’s Institute posed nude for a calendar to raise money for the Leukemia Research Fund, Calendar Girls is now playing at the San Miguel Playhouse.

The last week of the performance, November 15–18, is expected to be a sell out. Thursday–Saturday the performances are at 7pm and the Sunday matinee is at 3pm.

Calendar Girls has become the fastest selling play in British theater history and was made into a successful movie staring Helen Mirren in 2003.

Chris, one of the members, comes up with the idea for a Women’s Institute calendar that is not about Yorkshire churches or bridges. Then it is just a matter of convincing the kaboodle to drop their kits.

Yes, for some of the ladies, the calendar shoot is something of a lark. But for most of them, it is a question of overcoming deeply personal issues regarding grief, age, and body image.

There is an actual calendar for sale of all of the actresses in the San Miguel de Allende Calendar Girls cast. All proceeds go to the Solvay Hospice House. Even if you do not get to see the show (it was sold out before it opened), you can still get your hands on a calendar.
