Awards Ceremony Salutes México’s 100 “Must-Sees” at Ángela Peralta

By Karla Ortiz

On October 26, the winners of the National Tourism Guide contest, “The 100 Must-Sees of México 2018,” were recognized at the Ángela Peralta Theater.

Awards included those for Artists and Artisans, Hotels and Hotel Stays, and Attractions and Gastronomy.

Sanmiguelense artisan Hermes Arroyo, in charge of planning and décor for the event and a contest winner, received guests with traditional mojigangas, the larger-than-life papier-mâché puppets. It made for a colorful complement to the Historic Center’s streets.

Prior to the ceremony, harpist César Secundino played one of the pieces that won him first place in the World Harp Competition for México. Jarocha dancing accompanied Secundino’s performance. During the ceremony, attendees enjoyed performances by the National Jazz Orchestra of México and Roberta Viera.

Among the hospitality winners of the night were the states of Baja California, Michoacán, Monterrey, Guanajuato, and Veracruz. Many grateful winners’ speeches cited the fact that they were nominated as a matter of pride, not just for their businesses “but for México.” Winners said the contest itself shows the commitment to exalt México as a place of beauty worth visiting.

At the end of the evening, the guests strolled “callejoneada style,” i.e., led by Arroyo’s mojigangas in an informal procession to Casa Europa México, which hosted a cocktail party with canapés offered by Hacienda la Laborcilla de Querétaro. Guests had a taste of the local Allende Beer brand as well as mezcales while touring Casa Europa México’s art galleries.
