Learn Danzón at “Day of The Living” Event at El Sindicato
By Leonardo Rosen
Once again, we are coming to that most Mexican of celebrations, the Day of the Dead. We will wear calaca masks and costumes and watch the animated movie Coco again. For many of us from other cultures, we can briefly experience here in San Miguel de Allende a relationship with death that it is not terrifying but rather enjoyable. This is very positive. ¡Viva el Día de los Muertos!
However, let us not forget that every day the Supreme Being grants us life, the greatest of blessings. Thus we should celebrate whenever possible “el Día de los Vivos,” the “Day of the Living.” What better way to do this than to dance?
Since the dawn of the human race, we have danced to affirm life. In those early times, we banged rocks together, vocalized, and danced to ask the controlling powers of nature for what we needed and to thank them for granting it to us. Some cultures on Planet Earth still do that. Many of us “modern” humans have lost this type of communication with nature. However, there are those of us who dance socially to affirm life and to connect with each other. That’s why, in a society where so many people don’t dance, especially men, we continue to do it. We will not give up celebrating the Day of the Living every chance we get through dance.
We dancers do not belong to some kind of closed secret society. We are an open, welcoming one that wants to share the joy of dancing with everyone. Thus, in the spirit of love and good fellowship, we invite you to join us.
The Club de Danzón “Mercerina” and El Sindicato invite you to our next event of “El Danzón y Otros Ritmos Bailables” on Sunday, October 28, 4–7pm. We offer a danzón workshop at the level of the participants from 4 to 5pm, and an open social dance of danzón and other Latin rhythms from 5 to 7pm. This event takes place at El Sindicato, Recreo 4, Centro. Our telephone numbers are 152 0131 (El Sindicato) and 154 5840 (Leo, “El Brujo del Danzón”). We only ask for a voluntary contribution of any amount to support the community cultural projects of El Sindicato. Yes, we are bilingual.
You are the stars of this show, and we wish you a happy Day of the Living. “¡Ahí, Ná Má!”
