Mars Calling: Manifest Destiny or Grand Illusion?

COMM SHELTER Mars Calling

COMM SHELTER Mars Colony1

By David Johanssen

Some futurists believe Mars is the next logical home for humanity. But the real “red planet” is a trickster—strikingly beautiful, yet sweetly sinister. Even as we learn more about the fourth planet, this small, cold world continues to conceal its secrets. The technological means to cross space and perhaps bring this small world back to life is just now coming within our grasp. What is the probability that humans can one day occupy this mysterious planet, and how might this planetary migration impact the evolution of our species? Join us for a video and lively discussion of Mars Calling: Manifest Destiny or Grand Illusion? Oct 17 at 6pm.

Saturday, Oct 13 at 6pm: Hearts Beat Loud. An aging Brooklyn hipster starts a band with his teenage daughter, but when a song of theirs finds success online, it complicates Frank’s attempts to let go of his dreams of stardom and allow his daughter to find her own path in life. The Chicago Reader calls it “a keenly observed story of a Brooklyn father and daughter, charged with the kind of music as free-spirited as the duo is.”

Friday, Oct 19 at 6pm: Sollers Point. A young man released from prison and goes to live with his father (Jim Belushi). His intentions are in the right place, but as he taps into all his familiar resources, he finds that he may be reverting to his old ways. The New York Times says, “The loose, improvisational performances bolster the film’s realism and surface the boundless hope and great despair of the characters.”

Saturday, Oct 20 at 6pm: Eighth Grade. Thirteen-year-old Kayla endures the tidal wave of contemporary suburban adolescence as she makes her way through the last week of middle school—the end of her thus-far disastrous eighth-grade year. The San Diego Reader describes it as “an achingly honest film about some of the ghastliest years of adolescence. Funny, tender, and endearing.”
