Story Showcase Marks Festival’s Fifth Year

By Lee Harris

Get your tickets now for the Showcase Finale of the Fifth Annual San Miguel International Storytelling Festival. From the beginning, the Showcase has been the most popular event of the festival and has played to sold-out houses.

To celebrate its fifth year, the San Miguel International Storytelling Festival will present its Showcase Finale in the city’s premier performance hall, Teatro Angela Peralta, on Friday, October 12. The evening will begin with music and a wine reception in the lobby at 5pm, followed by an incredible array of stories, in English and Spanish, starting at 6pm in the theater.

Every year, the Showcase presents the best of the best stories that have been crafted and told during the festival events and workshops. Over the five-year history, we have seen many different stories told, from hair-raising tales of encounters with jungle animals and deadly snakes, to how the frustrations of bureaucracy can turn into a hilarious encounter with life’s daily comedy.

Looking five years back to how the festival started, volunteer CheriRae Wright recalls, “Stephanie and Gordon Medlock were visiting San Miguel de Allende and met Susan Page at the Galeria Atotonilco. Stephanie enthusiastically suggested to Susan we should consider having a storytelling festival here. When she returned to Indiana, Stephanie immediately drafted a proposal to collaborate with people in San Miguel to present a storytelling festival. Susan then put a notice on the Civil List inviting anyone interested in organizing a storytelling festival to attend a meeting.”

As the San Miguel de Allende volunteers started planning for the event, Stephanie continued to help from afar. CheriRae remembers, “We were a motley crew at best. Stephanie attended from her home in Indiana via video Skype, Mark Saunders was the only person present who had any experience in organizing productions, Jim Priest had lived several years in SMA and knew the community well, and I mistakenly arrived one hour late as the small group was saying goodbye to Stephanie, who was smiling from the laptop screen. I knew nothing about the task at hand but had attended a storytelling festival once several years ago and enjoyed the experience.”

A few months later, several members from Stephanie’s Indigan Storytellers arrived in San Miguel to begin helping local volunteers recruit and train storytellers for the first festival, held in 2014. CheriRae went on to lead the San Miguel Storytellers in organizing the festival for the first two years. The Storytelling Festival has continued to evolve every year. CheriRae points out, “From the beginning, the San Miguel community has actively supported and participated in the festival with joy, creativity, and enthusiasm. That’s what makes this Storytelling Festival so special.”
