Festival Offers Stories in Spanish and Schedules Showcase Auditions

By Lee Harris

San Miguel’s Fifth Annual International Storytelling Festival continues this week with Showcase auditions and stories performed in Spanish at Auditorio Miguel Malo at Belles Artes.

One of the benefits of listening to storytellers is to have a better understanding of the life experiences of others. An organization called Noche de Cuentos ( states its mission as “Celebrating the Power of Storytelling to Unite Communities.” Their programs have been said to “facilitate literacy through culturally meaningful connections with traditions and family values that are passed from generation to generation since the early stages of humankind.”

For several years now, the festival has had performances featuring local talent from the Spanish-speaking community. We would like to encourage English speakers who can

understand some Spanish to attend the evening of Stories in Spanish. The storytelling will begin at 6pm on Thursday, October 4, and admission is free.

Auditions for performers in the Showcase Finale of San Miguel’s Storytelling Festival will be held October 1 and 2 at Sala Literaria Bellas Artes. So pick one of your stories and contact San Miguel Storytellers right away at to register for an audition to tell us your special story.

There are two main audition requirements: your story cannot be longer than seven minutes, and whether true to life or bigger than life, your tale needs a strong protagonist, a conflict, and a satisfying resolution. We also ask you to tell your story without written notes, so spend some time practicing and timing your story.

No topics are off the table, but please consider our audience’s sensibilities. It’s never what story you tell, but how you tell it that makes the difference. Even the most ordinary event can entertain us with humor. Tell us why what happens in your story matters to you. Tell us what it feels like. You may even uncover a universal truth lurking beneath your story’s surface.

Storytellers will be chosen from these auditions to perform in the Showcase Finale at Teatro Angela Peralta on Friday, October 12. The Showcase evening will begin with a wine reception at 5pm, and stories will begin at 6pm.
