Monica Chang is a 23-year-old architect, artist, and teacher of modern art from Chiapas who has been inspired by beauty, life, and nature. She has captivated audiences with portraits that to her represent feelings that bring a human being into harmony with nature.

Last Tuesday, September 4, her exhibit, entitled The Entire World is a Garden, opened at the Santa Ana Café at the Biblioteca Pública. Her eighth exhibit, it will remain open until September 30.

When one sees her work, one can see elements of Pop Art. There is also much sensuality and innocence in her use of pastel colors and her break untraditional rectangular paintings, which has resulted in her works having circular frames.

Chang’s first approach toward art started at the age of six. She made sketches and drawings with chalk, watercolors, and acrylics. Her parents saw their daughter’s talent and, at age nine, enrolled her in classes where she would learn other techniques, such as using oils and acrylics on canvas. With the passage of time, she perfected her technique, sharpening some of the details of esthetics, precision, and depth of scenes. At the age of 16, she had her first individual exhibit, with 20 works shown in the Biblioteca del Tecnológico de Monterrey.

Later, she had another important exhibit, and El Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (The National Council for Culture and the Arts) of Chiapas acknowledged her by creating a catalogue of her works and exhibits. She has also had individual and collective exhibits abroad, in cities such as McAllen, Goliad, and Weslaco, Texas, and in Orlando, Florida. She has been invited to show her works in Atlanta and Rio de Janeiro as well.

Her exhibits in Mexico City have made her part of a group of artists who created a cultural center called Casa Lamm. This experience has allowed her to expand her technical knowledge and her knowledge of various styles, giving her a better comprehension of art.
