Night of Latin Guitar Will Benefit Refugees

Muro 2

By Honey Sharp

On October 25, the Refugee Relief Project will be holding “A Night of Latin Guitar” featuring the highly acclaimed guitarist, Alfredo Muro.

The Refugee Relief Project, under the auspices of the Portland, Oregon 5013c organization, Latin America Relief Fund, was established in 2016 by Sher and Gary Davidson to raise money for Albergue ABBA, a shelter in Celaya that aids migrants and refugees fleeing violence in Central America.

Funds raised from the benefit will help the Refugee Relief Project to continue to assist the shelter, which provides a free three-night stay, including showers, meals, phone calls home, counseling, free prostheses donated by the Red Cross (some refugees have fallen from or have been pushed off trains), and physical therapy.

The Refugee Relief Project provides for ABBA’s rent, some utilities, and other assistance when possible.

The concert’s featured guitarist, Alfredo Muro, was born in Peru. He regularly performs at international guitar festivals and tours the US, South America, and Asia. He has published over eight albums. Currently based in Guanajuato, he is also a composer and professor. He and his wife have lived in San Miguel de Allende, where he has previously performed at St Paul’s Church and at Belles Artes, among other venues.

Renowned guitarist and recording artist Jose Feliciano said of Muro, “The music of Alfredo Muro elevates the guitar to a higher plane…it is richly eloquent.”

Tickets are at 300 pesos each and can be purchased in advance after September 30 at Tesoros in t the Biblioteca on Reloj. Wine and beverages will be available for purchase during intermission, as well as CDs by Muro.

Our fundraiser last spring that featured the film Innocent Voices at Bellas Artes was a tremendous success. Having sold out, we suggest you purchase tickets in advance.
