Galería Casa Diana presents new Ángel Pahuamba Exhibition

By Alexandra Long

Galería Casa Diana is pleased to present Angel Pahuamba’s “Memoria del Tiempo” exhibition with an opening reception.

This exciting new body of works explores the legacy of pre-Hispanic cultures while staying true to Pahuamba’s unique and playful style. From his own indigenous community in the remote state of Michoacán, Mexico, to Guatemala and Chile, he draws on the illustrations, literature, and artifacts from pre-Columbian times to create anthropomorphic characters, creatures of the unconscious with geometric motifs and symbols. His modern twist and unrivaled talent as an illustrator produces rich and beautiful pieces, full of color and meaning, a narrative graffiti for a contemporary audience.

Pre-Hispanic art, time and memory are the central pillars of his new series, reminding us of the shared heritage of the ancient Americas and indigenous communities, be it in their artistic creations or in their plight for freedom and protection of their territories.

Pahuamba studied fine arts at the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolas de Hidalgo. He is proud of his indigenous roots and is a campaigner for the rights of communities like his own in Cheran, Michoacán. He has received numerous prizes such as “Lluvia en el Bosque” in the Salon of Watercolor 2012 and honorable mentions, as was the case in the Bienal Nacional Alfredo Zalce 2011.

He has participated in several national and international exhibitions. Nowadays, he is a full-time artist and teacher at the University of Morelia.
