Daniel Ellsberg to Appear in San Miguel

DANIEL ELLSBERG

By Susan Page

Daniel Ellsberg is a warm and entertaining speaker who will present shocking information about US nuclear policy. Famous for risking his life by leaking the Pentagon Papers that helped end the Vietnam War, Ellsberg is now blowing the whistle about one of the two greatest threats to the future of the world: nuclear war (the other being global warming.)

The story he will tell unfolds like a thriller, but it’s completely true, and Ellsberg offers feasible steps we can take to dismantle the existing “doomsday machine” and to avoid nuclear catastrophe.

Ellsberg’s new book, The Doomsday Machine, has won or is shortlisted for numerous prizes and is included in many “best books of 2017” lists. To be able to experience Ellsberg’s wry sense of humor and his edge-of-your-seat message, right here in San Miguel de Allende, is a rare privilege.

No other insider with high-level access has written so candidly of the nuclear strategy of the late Eisenhower and early Kennedy years, and nothing has fundamentally changed since that era. Until he had a dramatic change of heart and saw the error of his ways, Ellsberg was a top-secret strategist in the Defense Department. His account is an eyewitness exposé of the dangers of America’s top-secret seventy-year-long nuclear policy that continues to this day, the most dangerous arms buildup in the history of civilization.

Reviewers have been universally enthusiastic about Ellsberg’s book, The Doomsday Machine. “He is a vigorous writer with a gift for dramatic tension and the unfolding of events as they cascade toward disaster,” said Thomas Powers in the New York Review of Books. “Gripping and unnerving . . . A must-read of the highest order, Ellsberg’s profoundly awakening chronicle is essential to our future,” said Booklist.

The San Miguel Literary Sala is thrilled to present Daniel Ellsberg to the San Miguel community. In an exciting experiment that may lead to other appearances by distinguished speakers, Ellsberg will appear by satellite, speaking to us from Berkeley, California, and with live Q and A following his talk. His doctors will not allow him to travel to our altitude.
