Rotary to Discuss Blindness Causes in Elders

By Skip Essick

A randomized study of adults over the age of 50 was conducted recently to look into the causes of blindness and visual impairment. The study also targeted adults with a history of diabetes and cataracts. The result of this study, which was conducted in Querétaro, is the Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness. You are invited to hear this eye-opening presentation at The Midday Club of San Miguel de Allende with Professor Van Lansingh from the Instituto Mexicano de Oftalmología (IMO).

Lansingh is part of the medical and management team of the IMO, whose mission is to train eye-care teams to better serve the needs of the whole population, particularly the most impoverished segments, giving them care with high quality and compassion. The goal is to establish branches and franchises to cover the areas of need, regardless of the geographical location. IMO also wants to use available technology like telemedicine and imagining technology to make services more cost-efficient.

Lansingh has worked in Latin America, North America, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific. He obtained his medical degree in 1987 from the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico City, with residency and postgraduate work in Mexico City and the Nielsen Center for Eye Surgery/University of South Florida. In 2005, he was awarded a PhD in health sciences from the University of Melbourne, after fieldwork with aboriginal communities in Central Australia.

Lansingh is also a peer reviewer for Eye, Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, Ophthalmic Epidemiology, Oftalmología Clinica y Experimental, and the Australian Medical Journal, among others. He has authored or coauthored more than 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 20 chapters in books, and several posters and oral presentations. He is a frequent lecturer in various international meetings and courses. We are most pleased to have him join us Tuesday, August 14 at 12pm at the Hotel Mission on Salida a Queretaro. Parking is free, and the hotel is easily accessible by bus.
