Dear Editor: By W. Peters

I write to respond to the article about tourism in the July 27 addition of Atención. I am completely enraged by the attitude and arrogance of the officials who were interviewed. They advocate more tourism for the wealthy and seem to disparage the “uncontrollable street vendors” who are just trying to make a little money, who must certainly look a little bit poor to the officials and high-end tourists they want in town. This is elitist, at best. These same officials also disparage the people who speak against this uncontrolled development as “….not from here…” Well, I’m one of those people. I came here nearly 25 years ago and fell in love with the quality of life and the Mexican culture in this town. I’m smart, well-traveled and a trained design professional. And, I spend money here. What’s happening in San Miguel is nothing short of a big mess. I love this place and am horrified to see what is happening. And, my Mexican friends agree.

Even more development for more housing and high-end hotels is planned and apparently approved. I ask anyone to show me proof that we have adequate water, sanitary sewerage facilities, proper police protection, adequate roads and parking. This can’t go on any longer. This place that is supposedly the “best place” in the world will be ruined forever.

I regret that I have little hope this will change………but maybe, if more people speak up.
