The Wild Muse Calls You To Show Up and Write!
By Wyman Rousseau
Monthly writing workshops, held in central San Miguel de Allende, will resume on Wednesdays, beginning August 8th. The goal is for each participant to produce at least one solid draft of a story or poem per week, for personal satisfaction or publication. Participants may use class exercises and writing time to revise and polish work already in progress. All levels of experience are welcome.
Each week, samples of fine writing will be used to demonstrate literary techniques and as models for our own work, to elicit ideas, memories, and inspire us to write with greater honesty and clarity. We will record and transform our thoughts and experiences into memorable poetry or prose—or a hybrid form.
We will discuss short forms of creative nonfiction and poetry by notable writers, including Valeria Luiselli, Joan Didion, Richard Blanco, Natasha Trethewey, Campbell McGrath, David Wagoner, Javier Zamora, Ross Gay, Ada Limón, and Rumi. We’ll also experiment with ekphrastic writing (recreating a work of art in words).
We’ll learn ways to dive below the surface of a story to enrich the telling of our memories of home, family, places we’ve traveled, or other experiences from our lives.
The intent is to create a safe environment for participants to share their work and receive positive feedback. Sharing is optional and encouraged. We will listen to the silence, to each other, and to ourselves.
Workshops are led by Maia Williams, codirector of the international San Miguel Writers’ Conference, founder of San Miguel’s Poetry Café Bellas Artes, and publisher of Crossroads: La Vida Creative en San Miguel de Allende. Courses are conducted in English. Seating is limited. Preregister or ask a question via email: firstname.lastname@example.org
