The “finest exhibition and sale of Mexican popular arts in all of Mexico,” according to Alberto Ruy Sanchez, editor of Artes de Mexico, just got finer! We are thrilled to present the work of sculptor Oscar Hernández, whose stunning metal sculptures are unlike any other folk art. He crafts animals, birds, skeletons, and alebrijes out of heavy metal wire and then solders the entire piece together. Then he paints the figures with bright and beautiful auto paints. Even though the pieces look delicate, they are extremely durable. Unlike most folk art, they could be exhibited outdoors.

Oscar Hernández began working with the famed cartoneria (paper mache)

artist, Saulo Moreno. Moreno began his sculptures with wire but then completed the pieces with cartoneria. Hernández got the idea to use solder and to create the pieces out of metal alone. The results are exuberant, lively, colorful, and imaginative works of art that will brighten any environment and are sure to be conversation pieces. The work is definitely unusual and has a kind of how-does-he-do-that mysterious quality. We recently acquired many new pieces from Hernández.

Recent Buying Trip

Gallery owner Mayer Shacter and his wife just returned from a buying trip to villages in the states of Puebla and Guerrero with a van jam-packed with the distinctive burnished ceramics from Acatlan, Puebla; stunning new lacquer boxes and trays from Olinala, Guerrero; very special works from the town competition in Tamalacatzingo, Guerrero; and new silver jewelry from the historic silver town of Taxco.

Galeria Atotonilco, now in its eleventh year, exhibits a wide variety of folk art and antiques in a 6,000 square-foot showroom in a lush country setting and a much-publicized architecturally interesting building. The gallery is usually open only by appointment but is open to all for this Open House on Saturday and Sunday, August 4 and 5, noon–5pm both days. Directions to the gallery are in our ad in this issue. 415 185 2225.
