Judith Jenya Presents Exhibit of New Paintings in Guanajuato

Judith Jenya Atencion

By Mark Johaningsmeir

A collection of Judith Jenya’s new colorful paintings will go on exhibit Saturday, August 4. The show opens at 6pm in the Foro Cultural 81 gallery in the heart of the city of Guanajuato. In addition to Jenya’s paintings, the exhibit also includes three photographers from Guanajuato. The show will run for two months.

Jenya’s work evokes familiar images of landscape, nature, and people. She explores the

intersection of these familiar realities with a fanciful treatment, employing bold strokes of pallet knife and brush and an intense palette of colors. Her work is influenced by Impressionism, Expressionism and a unique vocabulary of her own.

Judith first visited San Miguel de Allende as a girl in the 1950s when it was a very small town. Charmed by the place, she vowed to return and join the growing community of artists. After several careers and homes in Hawaii, California, and Europe, she fulfilled that early dream in 2006. Now her paintings reflect the land she loves and the place she has chosen to call home. Her work has been exhibited and collected widely in the San Miguel area, California, Hawaii, and in Europe.

Jenya brought her artist’s eye to the written word when in 2014 she collaborated with Eugenia Yllades, a Guanajuato writer, and published a book of poetry. Jenya and Yllades each wrote from their experience of their home city. Yllades’s poetry is also informed by her work as an artist. Each poem was translated from the poet’s original language (English and Spanish) into each other’s language. Copies of the book will be available at the show.

Judith last showed her work in Guanajuato in 2010. One of the appreciative visitors to that exhibit was Mark Johaningsmeir. The following year Judith and Mark were married and now enjoy the home they designed and built together.

The newly refurbished Foro Cultural 81 gallery is located at calle Positos 81, in the heart of Guanajuato, between the Museo de Diego Rivera and the Museo la Alhondiga de Granaditas. She welcomes all to this celebration of her recent work.
