By Cliff DuRand

Two years ago, the Center for Global Justice supported Sallie Latch in her calling to assist the refugees who were streaming to the Greek island of Samos, fleeing the wars that were ravaging the Middle East. This feisty 83-year-old lady spent eight months there talking with terrified, exhausted, cold, hungry, and ill refugees. She interviewed the Greek people of Samos who aided these strangers, even though they had little themselves. And she interviewed international volunteers like herself who had come to do what they could to relieve human suffering.

Now Sallie has published their stories in a riveting book, Hear Me: Rare, Raw Interviews with Syrian Refugees and Other Heroes of the Refugee Crisis in Greece. This Saturday you will have an opportunity to hear Sallie read some of these stories at her book launch. But you will want to read the entire book. Her interviews will parade the human drama before your eyes. They will lead you to despair. They will inspire you with hope. We hear the stories of refugees fleeing from the violence of war and the dangers of the middle passage, where some prey on their vulnerability. We hear from ordinary people of Greece who rise above differences of language, religion, and culture to share what little they have to help fellow humans. These stories will move you to weep while also restoring your faith in humanity. This is the human story of our troubled times.

Those of you who know Sallie know of her talent for drawing people out in conversation. In these interviews, she has realized her calling. Buy a signed copy of Hear Me or order it online from for only US$19.50 or US$8.99 for the e-book.
