Grease Is the Word

Saturday Night Fever1

By David Johanssen

Dust off your bell-bottoms, and get ready for nonstop disco hits as we present ’70s classics on our big screen with surround-sound stereo for the best concert experience in San Miguel!

Saturday, July 28, at 6pm: Grease. 1950’s teens Danny (John Travolta) and Australian Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) spend their “Summer Nights” falling in love, but once fall comes, it’s back to school and its cliques. According to the Hollywood Reporter, “What makes it work is its youthful vitality, mixed with a dash of disco… tremendous energy and imagination!” Declaring their devotion in such ballads as “Hopelessly Devoted to You” and “Sandy,” the young lovers split, reconcile, and split again with dances, drive-ins, and a drag race mixed in before deciding “You’re the One That I Want” at the climactic carnival.

Wednesday, August 1, at 6pm: The Joy of the Bee Gees. Guilty pleasure or genius harmonies, misfits or mavericks—how do we feel about the Bee Gees? Are the brothers Gibb a cacophony of falsettos or songwriting maestros? Are they the voice of comedy or tragedy? How deep is our love and how deep are the Bee Gees? We will discuss ’70s disco culture and whatever happened to the hippies after the documentary.

Friday, August 3, at 6pm: Saturday Night Fever. With this film, John Travolta graduated from minor celebrity to being an overnight superstar. Travolta plays Tony Manero, a working-class guy in Brooklyn,—in real life a peasant, but on the disco dance floor, he’s the king! Time Out magazine says, “Not many movies are genuine cultural phenomena… Saturday Night Fever is without doubt the most memorable.”

Friday, July 27, at 5pm: The Star Wars Trilogy as it fits with Joseph Campbell’s iconic The Hero’s Journey concludes with The Return of the Jedi. Kathryn Gillet will give commentary on “hero” elements she has noted throughout each film to help you see how Campbell and Lucas crafted such timeless stories. See what makes Lucas’s works so eternal.
