Celebrate with Music and Art for Ojala Niños!

OJALA

By Elsmarie Norby

On Sunday, July 29, at 2pm, we welcome you to the community of San Miguel Viejo to enjoy a wonderful free concert and view the art donated by many fine artists, all to benefit Ojala Niños and our plan to build a community cultural center with a small medical clinic.

The needs of rural communities around San Miguel are legion, but the simplest health care is an arduous journey, usually for moms carrying babies and accompanied by one or more other small children. Ojala Niños has been providing free daily afternoon classes in arts, literacy, and other subjects to all the children in this community for over nine years. Now it’s time to give them a permanent place for meetings and classes, built with sustainable materials, including a water harvesting system and a clinic. Every donation is important to complete this much-needed project. Your donation will also be matched by a generous friend.

“Conciertos en el Campo,” as they are known, have been called by many, the most delightful experience in San Miguel. This time the music will be by Anam Cara, a trio of voices with guitar and bass, playing an array of music to make you smile, cry a little, and maybe sing along. There will be wine and other beverages and snacks to enjoy while viewing the art for sale. The art sale will be online until noon on Tuesday, July 31. Every peso and dollar will go toward building the new center.

Free bus transportation will depart at 1:15pm from Calle Cardo, in front of St Paul’s Episcopal Church. If you wish to drive to San Miguel Viejo, proceed over the railroad tracks at the train station, and continue straight ahead onto the cobblestone road. About a half mile further, there is a left-hand fork down a hill and past a soccer field on the right. Now you’re in the community. Follow the signs saying “Chapel—Concert.” It’s a nice 40-plus-minute walk from the Bodega Aurrera.

We welcome you to San Miguel Viejo on Sunday, July 29, at 2pm.
