There’s No Such Thing as a Free Lunch (or Free Cat or Dog)

By Megan Gabel

My Dad always said, “There’s no such thing as a free lunch.” I bet a lot of your parents said that to you as well. This adage applies to any opportunity to adopt a free cat or dog. No matter what someone tells you, responsible pet ownership costs money. Sure, it’s fun to watch kittens romp and puppies play, but there is much more to bringing a pet into your family. There is a protocol to follow to check that your new pet is currently healthy and remains so. Strive to ensure that the pet you bring into your home is not vulnerable to disease and is or will be sterilized.

If you adopt an SPA animal (like Gussy and Josie), we’ve got it covered! Our adoption fee is 500 pesos. For cats, the fee includes sterilization, all current vaccinations, deworming, feline leukemia/FIV test, and feline leukemia vaccine and booster. For dogs, it includes sterilization, all current vaccinations, deworming, the leptospirosis booster, and enrollment in the Green Paw Pet Registration Program. We want all our animals fully protected and sterilized. You can count on us—we’ve been around for more than 38 years!

The truth is we lose money on every adoption because of how inclusive our adoption fee is. Our primary motivation is to find loving families for our cats and dogs and to make sure that every pet adopted from the SPA has necessary vaccinations and is sterilized.

We want the same thing for non-SPA animals. So, our lower-cost on-site clinic with a full-time veterinarian (Dra. Adriana Rivera) can examine your new pet, conduct tests, and treat as necessary, and offer packages to reduce the cost of vaccinations and sterilization to help all owners fulfill their responsibilities to take good care of their pets. We have a Complete Puppy Package, Complete Kitten Package, and an Adult Dog Package, details of which are spelled out on our website, You may also contact us for information at Los Pinos 7, 152-6124.

Please help us feed all our resident cats and dogs (about 100) by donating to this year’s Pet Food Money Bank. Our goal is to raise 250,000 pesos (about USD$14,500), all of which will apply to our annual cost of food. All July donations up to a total of USD$2,000 Will Be Matched! For more information, please see or write
