It’s high time for a laugh! With so much going on in the world, it’s good to get out and have some fun, yes? So, we invite you to join us for a great night of entertainment. If you’ve seen one of The Improv People’s shows over the past seven years and lived to talk about it—then you’re already familiar with how this fantastic art form, called improvisational theater, works. And for those of you who haven’t attended our shows, get ready to grab your hats and hold on!

Our improv troupe creates theater-in-the-moment. None of the dialogue, entrances, exits, plots, ideas, or characters has been pre-planned. Everything you see on stage is completely improvised and made up on the spot. And…for our next show on Saturday, July 28, we thought we would take what’s already a fairly challenging endeavor and kick it up a notch!

After getting a prompt from the audience, we’ll begin the show at the END, with three improvised, climactic scenes of impending doom. Then, after you vote for your preferred scene, we’ll create the backstory (i.e., what happened previously to lead up to that climax) and finish the show back at the beginning! That means we’ll have to remember and recreate the initial scene that you voted for!Oy,vey! As a special treat, we invite you to stay after the show for a few minutes for a Q + A with the cast, to ask any questions about our creative process, how to create theater-in-the-moment, what terrifies us most about this art-form, and more!

And, here’s a wee bit of “backstory” about The Improv People. After moving to San Miguel nine years ago, Joseph was hoping to take improv classes or maybe even audition for a troupe. Yet, there were none to be found. After kvetching about it for months, Eli finally said: You know, if you wanna do this, you’re gonna have to start something yourself.” And after posting a notice on the civil list, a gathering was held in our acting studio on April 2, 2011, and voilà! Soon, the Improv People were performing to SOLD OUT audiences at VC and Friends (our inaugural show), La Ostra Roja, The Studio Space, and Teatro Santa Ana. Dozens and dozens of brave souls have taken improv classes with Joseph over the years, and have learned the value of using the skills of improv in their daily lives—saying yes to new opportunities, paying attention, listening, being willing to make mistakes, and much more.

For this show, the talented Gina Giampaoli, our newest cast member, will be performing with us in Backstory, her first improv show ever! As of this writing, most of the tickets have sold and nearly every show for the past seven years has sold out. All this is to say, please hop, skip, or jump your way to buy tickets at Teatro Santa Ana’s box office or online at TheImprovPeople.com/classes-performances or from any cast member: Anne Campbell, Kate Rowland, Barbara Ziff, Gina Giampaoli, Chris Kapilla, Eli Hans, and Joseph Bennett. Each of us wishes to thank you so much for your support of The Improv People. We so appreciate you!
