Artemio Sepúlveda Presents His Work at Galería Casa Diana

Blanca en Sueños

By Alexandra Long

Galería Casa Diana is pleased to present its summer exhibition of recent works with an opening reception on Thursday, July 26, from 5–7pm.

On display will be the latest works by Artemio Sepúlveda, a genius of expressionism, heir to the tradition of David Alfaro Siqueiros and José Clemente Orozco. The works showcase the artist’s favorite subject matter: The Nude. Among the most outstanding works is the nude of a young woman kneeling in a spring. Her body with a chaste and elegant pose is bathed in a soft and warm light. In this piece, the artist renounces the use of bold colors, limiting his palette to a harmonious range of subtle blue hues. Artemio’s ability to depict the beauty of the female nude, its sensuality and eroticism, equals his talent as a portrait artist. The show also includes a series of striking portraits, as well as a self-portrait, reflecting the plight of the working man, his emotional upheavals, joys, and pains, which echo the artist’s personal experience. Artemio (b.1937, Los Rodríguez, Nuevo León) grew up in the mining town of Nueva Rosita Coahuila, near the border of Texas, and saw firsthand the daily affliction of miners and the hardships of workers. His paintings are powerful as well as tender expressions of his soul.

Artemio belonged to the Nueva Presencia Group next to José Luis Cuevas, Francisco Corzas, Francisco Icaza, Arnold Belkin, Leonel Góngora, Rafael Coronel, and José Muñoz. In the late seventies, Artemio Sepulveda moved to California and taught at the fine art institute and continued to work on his own paintings for principle shows. It was here that he achieved critical acclaim for his work. He now lives and works in Mexico.

Gallery hours are Monday–Saturday, 10am–6pm and Sunday, 11am–4pm. Closed Wednesdays. For additional information please contact galeriacasadiana@gmail.com, 415 1520885
